St Patrick's Links Golf Club

St Patrick's Links Golf Club

St. Patrick’s Golf Links is a 36-hole development comprising two 18-hole links courses, Maheramagorgan and Trá Mó, in the North-West part of Ireland.

The two courses lie amongst the sandy hills of Sheephaven Bay, a golfing links wonderland, that adjoins the long-established Rosapenna Golf Club giving this area four 18-hole classic links courses. Maheramogorgan was designed in 1982 by the late Eddie Hackett, perhaps the most prolific Irish golf course architect of all time, whilst Trá Mó followed 11 years later, designed by Joanne O'Haire, a former Royal Co. Down assistant professional.

The courses enjoy a splendid location on the Donegal coastline and offer as true a links test of golf as you are likely to experience. Great stuff indeed.

IOSAS Centre Christmas Trail December 2016

Follow The Star to the Celtic Garden Christmas Trail at the IOSAS Centre.

Once again the Celtic Prayer Garden at the IOSAS Centre, Derryvane, Muff will be transformed to provide a truly memorable Christmas experience for all the family.

Each little house in the garden will have its own Christmas theme and, in the tradition of the great Irish storytellers, will have characters telling the Christian stories behind some of our favourite Christmas traditions. These include the story of St Nicholas, the Candy Cane and of course the greatest story ever told, the birth of Jesus.

The tranquil setting will be an oasis for families looking to escape the commercialism, hustle and bustle which can dominate this time of year. Take some time together to enjoy an experience which will have the children discussing the real Christmas story long after this event.

Families will enjoy a guided trail under starlight and a very special dramatic piece created especially for this event and performed by young people. Children can take part in craft activities including cookie decorating while the parents can take a few moments to enjoy a hot drink and festive treats at the IOSAS Centre Café.

This year capture the excitement of the season and combine it with the true spirit of the Christmas message.

The Celtic Garden Christmas Trail at the IOSAS Centre – the traditions of Christmas past for a wonderful family Christmas present.

A wonderful family Christmas experience in a truly unique setting. Storytelling, Christmas themed arts and crafts, a very special dramatic performance and Christmas carols. Not to be missed!!!

Narin & Portnoo Golf Club

Narin and Portnoo Golf Club

Narin and Portnoo Golf Club, is situated in a beautiful seaside resort in southwest Donegal. It is considered one of the finest natural and scenic 18-hole links courses in Ireland, with sweeping views of Gweebarra Bay.

Opened in 1930, it is engagingly old fashioned with a meandering routing over and around the dunes. The course has recently been re-developed and the new par 73 layout offers a range of teeing areas and challenges to suit all golfers.

All manner of shots are required here: draws around sharp dog-legs; crisp irons to par threes over cavernous terrain; accurate tee shots down snake-like fairways, some wide and some not so generous; low trajectory shots into the Atlantic breezes; high shots down-breeze into raised and firm greens; chip and run shots over the mounds and dips. Throughout the adventure, all are captivated by the scenery and once experienced, it’s a course to which golfers return again and again.

Ballybofey and Stranorlar Golf Club

Ballybofey and Stranorlar Golf Club

Ballybofey and Stranorlar is situated just over ten miles from the delightful town of Letterkenny and is regarded as one of the unsung heroes of all Ulster's wonderful golf courses.

It is not an overly long parkland course as it sits at just under 5,500 yards but it poses a threat to the unwitting golfer, something which its architect, PC Carr, will be rather pleased about. It is an attractive looking course and boasts great views of the Finn Valley and the surrounding Donegal Mountains.

Most, if not all, the fairways are lined with mature trees ensuring that straight driving is required if a decent looking card is to be produced.

Rosapenna Golf Resort

Rosapenna Golf Resort

Golf here dates from 1891 when the fourth Earl of Leitrim who owned most of the local land enticed Old Tom Morris to come over from St. Andrews and lay out a nine hole parkland course near his manor house. When Morris saw the hundreds of acres of rambling sand dunes along nearby Sheephaven Bay, the Earl accepted Morris’s advice to locate the golf course there. The site was so good for golf that 15 of the original 18 greens were completely natural.

Harry Vardon and James Braid subsequently added bunkers and length in the early 20th century as the golf ball and equipment improved but they left the greens untouched. Enter Pat Ruddy, of European Club fame, who at the request of Rosapenna owner Frank Casey designed the Sandy Hills course in the early days of the 21st century. When the new course opened in 2003, Rosapenna had 36 of the finest holes in Ireland and a future as one of the world’s fine golf destinations, especially for the links land enthusiast.

Summer 2016 in Donegal

The county of Donegal has long been known for it’s bustling activity and friendly character. This Summer, as always, there are a range of events all over Donegal which cater to all walks of life. We’re going to highlight just a few of them to give you an idea of the craic you can look forward to being part of.

Dylanfest on the Lough 2016

Moville, Donegal

It’s almost the 10th Anniversary of this celebration of the music of Bob Dylan which takes place in the idyllic town of Moville on the Inishowen Peninsula of County Donegal. Operating over 4 days and featuring musicians from all over the world playing both indoor and outdoor venues, this event rivals only Duluth Dylan Fest in Minnesota where the legendary singer-songwriter was born. Bring the whole family to what’s always been a fantastic few days of songs and sing-a-longs and who knows, maybe we might see an appearance from Mr Zimmerman himself this year?

Details on tickets can be found here.

Donegal Marathon

Letterkenny, Donegal

What conjures in ones mind when they think of Donegal? Wild rugged coastlines and a delicious pint of Guinness to drink in the views? Or running a marathon, most likely in the rain? We’re willing to bet it’s the former and not the latter but don’t let that put you off signing up for the Donegal Marathon taking place August 21st. Offering both the full and half marathon for those not quite up to the challenge yet, it always proves to be a great day out for the runners and their families and we can guarantee that pint of Guinness will taste 10 times better afterwards.

Details on registering can be found here.

Killybegs Summer Festival

Killybegs, Donegal

The town of Killybegs, long celebrated in song from some of Ireland’s greats such as PP Slaggart to Tommy Makem is Ireland’s largest fishing port and a beautiful backdrop to a brilliant yearly tradition - The Killybegs Summer Festival held this year from August 5th to August 7th. Bring the whole family and experience a range of fun activities to keep you entertained for days in between taking in the stunning coastline and breathtaking scenery with maybe time for a sneaky pint.

More details can be found here

Of course that’s not all Donegal has to offer this Summer but we hope this small taste of whats on will start to show you just some of the magic that can be found. As always check out Donegal Cottage to find great deals on accommodation all over Donegal.

North West Golf Club

North West Golf Club

Established in 1891, The Northwest Golf Club has often been dubbed the 'St Andrews of Ireland' as most people tend to draw its links comparisons with that of the famous Scottish links.

The course is situated three miles from Buncrana, ten miles from Derry and about one mile north of the attractive little village of Fahan.

Like any traditional links course, it features concealed runs and bumps approaching many of the greens. Also, most hazards are not visible from the tees so it is very much a case of careful shot selection and keeping the driver firmly in the bag.

Patrick Macgill Summer School in Glenties Saturday 16th July 2016 - Saturday 23rd July 2016

"The MacGill Summer School, now in its 36th year, will kick off in Glenties on Saturday, July 16th and run to Saturday, July 23rd with what promises to be an exceptionally interesting programme coming as it does months after an intriguing general election and commemorations of the 1916 rebellion. A new government will be in place but comprised of which parties and, more importantly, what policies, priorities and values? Reflections on 1916 and on the successes and failures since then will also bring a keen edge to the deliberations at this year’s School.

The Saturday start and finish is to allow us, with more ease, to pay homage to our friend and great playwright, Brian Friel, who, alas, has departed from us since our last MacGill in 2015. Brian always took a keen interest in the proceedings of the School and with his wife, Anne, attended every opening night for many years and loved getting back to Glenties – his Ballybeg where he now reposes."
